Devotional: In Genesis 2 we find the story of how man and woman were made into living people. This poetic narrative describes God as breathing into the nose of the first human, Adam. This brings Adam to life, a life he will share with the woman, Eve.
It is this breath that the Hebrews saw as a sustainer of life. The Hebrew word ruachmeans breath, wind, and spirit. In other words, when they thought of ruach they thought of an invisible force that moves through the air with no visible substance filling our lungs to capacity so that we might live.
Jesus’ gives this back to God. God’s breath/wind/spirit is something we rent. In other words, think of Jesus as saying, “Father, into your hands I commit my sustaining life-force.” Jesus gave back to the Father what the Father gave to him.
Your ruach is a rental. Someday you must give it back. How will you use it? Will you be ready to give it back willingly knowing you gave your all to God or will you find yourself with regret?
Prayer: God, all life comes from you. Every breath is your gift. Help me to use it for your glory.
Action Step: Take this evening to go for a walk. Maybe in a local park. Maybe down the streets were you live. Breath in the air. This is God’s gift…each gasp of air is his. Remember the death of our Lord and his example for us.
